A Father’s Vision for His Son

1 Kiings 1:1 “When David’s time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, 2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, 3and keep the charge of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses,) that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, 4that the LORD may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul you shall not lack[a] a man on the throne of Israel.’

As King David was dying he said some powerful words to his son to leave as a legacy and prayer. We see that he gave Solomon some vision for what he should become. This vision involved being strong, being a man, obeying God, walking in his ways, keeping his commands. It’s a vision that every father should lay out for his son.

I have two sons, Ethan and Tyler. I try to lay out vision for my sons every day. I try to teach them what a man is to become, what he looks like when he follows God, how he should act and how he should treat others. But I am encouraged to be more proactive in telling my sons who and what they are to become.

God, please remind me every day to cast vision for my sons. Let me have teachable moments with them every day that they will never forget!
